For 50 summers, the City of Roswell’s Roswell Area Park Pool has brought together families, friends, and neighbors to splash, swim, and make memories. Originally built in 1974 and officially opened in 1975, this community pool has become more than just a place to cool off—it’s a cornerstone of Roswell’s community spirit.
Located at 10495 Woodstock Rd., Roswell, GA 30075, the pool was created with big ambitions: a recreational space for families, a home for swim lessons, diving, lifeguard training, and even a facility that meets standards for Olympic tryouts and the Pan American Games.
The Vision in the ‘70s
Back in the 1970s, the City of Roswell had a small-town charm with growing families and expanding parks. Former Mayor W.L. “Pug” Mabry and Councilman Don White led a bold vision to create a central gathering space for summer fun. Thanks to a 1974 City-wide bond referendum, the Roswell Area Park Pool was born with $375,000 allocated to its construction.
Groundbreaking began in October 1974, and by June 19, 1975, the pool welcomed its first visitors. That opening week saw 350 swimmers and 450 swim lesson registration, nearly all Roswell residents.
A Pool Ahead of Its Time
The original pool plan included:
- A 50-meter Olympic-sized pool
- Space for up to 500 guests
- A diving area for up to 25 people with depths ranging from 4 ft 6 in to 12 ft
- A children’s wading pool with spray features
- Locker rooms, staff offices, and concessions stand
50 Summers Later
Today, the Roswell Area Park Pool remains one of Roswell’s most popular summer spots. It hosts swim teams, lessons, lap swimming, lifeguard certification, and fun for all ages. With updated amenities and programs, it continues to bring generations together—just as it did in 1975, which is a contribution for Roswell to become the #1 family community in America.
